Do I switch back to Windows and lose all the benefits of my Mac or do I keep Mac and deal with Apple's terrible new hardware? If I get a Macbook (regular or Pro) and there's a keyboard issue (and the current failure rate for 2015-through-current Macs is estimated at 25%), you literally have to pay $700 for the repair if you don't pay for Apple Care.

And that $700 doesn't put you in a better situation. You could still get dust under one of their keys on your newly repaired laptop and have to go through the whole thing again. Buying a new Mac right now is just a really bad option.

Much of the development stuff I do either "may work" or "here's a binary but if it doesn't work, tough ... get a real OS" for Windows.

Linux is great for running server stuff but still sucks as a user environment. If I never have to touch Gnome again, I'll still be angry as hell about Gnome.

This is going to sound wild but right now my best option to replace my laptop if that becomes necessary might be to set up a Linux/BSD server and buy a tablet that can SSH to the server when I need to make adjustments to the infrastructure bits.

Although I can't think of a single mobile OS that has an IDE I would consider a replacement for Atom, Notepad++/SciTE/Textwrangler, etc. so that's still a pretty terrible option.

Either Apple or Microsoft needs to get their crap together. Preferably both but right now I can't count on either. Apple fixing their hardware is probably easier for them to do than Microsoft undoing 30 years of terrible OS decisions underpinning Windows 10 and then all the developers deciding to support Windows 10 officially. (Note: I like Windows 10. It's the best OS Microsoft has ever made. It's still undermined by 30 years worth of terrible decisions.)

May the gods have mercy on all of us if I find myself running Linux on a flipping laptop six months from now.
